Brand new Mr & Mrs!

The weather was kind, so Tracy and Steven’s wedding ceremony could be outside, in the beautiful grounds of Innes House. An ancient, venerable tree was the backdrop, and as guests gathered Callum played wonderful tunes on the upright piano he’d brought with him. Steven joked with guests and Best Men as he waited, and soon I was asking guests to stand and Tracy and her Bridesmaids were taking their places in front of the tree.

After welcomes and introductions, I said to the guests, ‘So what’s going to happen? Well, all humanist weddings are different, because the Bride and Groom choose what to include. For today, Tracy and Steven have written some personal words – some of which they’ve kept secret from one another, and I’ll be revealing those in a few minutes’ time! After the revelations, they’ll exchange their vows and rings – but before all that we’re going to warm the wedding rings and I’ll give you all the opportunity to give a loud shout-out for Steven & Tracy!’

This was the shout-out: ‘Do you, family and friends, give your affirmation to the choice of Steven and Tracy to be joined in marriage and wish them well for their future together?’ ‘Yes, we do!’

Perhaps one or two of their guests were thinking or saying, ‘About time too!’ Because Stephen and Tracy had been together for over 18 years – and today, their wedding day, was the 18th birthday of their lovely daughter, Bridesmaid Sadie!

What were the secret words? Well, this was a ‘Three Things I Love’ with a difference, as I explained to the guests: I invited Steven and Tracy to send me, separately and secretly, a list of three things they love about each other. Are they looking a bit nervous…?

Steven, Tracy said: 1) She loves that over the years you have always put family first and your love for her and Sadie is deep and unconditional. 2) She loves that you are a strong, confident character – this attracts her to you – and she hopes Sadie turns out like that too – Tracy says she feels so safe by your side. 3) Thirdly, she says that no one has stolen her heart like you have – and you can keep it forever – she is truly yours because she’s only going to do this once!!

Steven, Tracy was a bit later than I would have wished sending me her three things – they arrived in my inbox the day before yesterday – but as you know she got them sent ahead of yours! Yours arrived at half past eight last night – and you broke the rules, just a bit… but of course they were all worth waiting for so I’ll have to forgive you!!

Tracy, Steven told me: 1) You cook… sometimes. 2) You clean… sometimes. 3) He says he loves the way you have brought up your beautiful daughter, he loves the joy it gives him when watching you tend to your hairy bairns (the dogs), he loves the way you can make time for ANYONE in their time of need, he loves your uncanny ability to Improvise, Adapt and Overcome his other-wordly powers of ignoring any and all spoken or written instructions. 4) Finally, most of all, the thing he loves is that in all the years of knowing you, you have never been anyone else but yourself.

Then I thanked Tracy and Steven for letting me share that with everyone! And soon they’d stated their vows and given one another wedding rings, and we’d signed and witnessed the legal document, before concluding the ceremony with thanks to family and friends, and then this stirring well-wishing: Strike hands with me, the glasses brim, the dew is on the heather, for love is good and life is long, and two are best together! Time for the celebrations to begin!

Best wishes to Steven and Tracy for laughs and happiness in their married life!
